Foggy mornings

Some mornings the mind arrives wearing wool, and the day must be met through it.

The morning that arrives already muffled

You know the feeling, even if you have never liked the phrase people use for it. The kettle is where it always is, and yet the hand hesitates. A name you have known for forty years stands just out of reach, polite and useless. The window is clear enough, but the thoughts behind your eyes are not. You are not required to call this a failure of character. A muffled morning is a weather report, not a sentence.

For a reader near seventy, the fear under the wool is often this: that the morning is a preview, and that preview will become the whole climate. Younger women meet a cousin of the same fog after a bad night, a long worry, a body that is changing, or a season of too many claims. We will not sort those causes for you. A page that pretends to know why your head is thick is play-acting at medicine. What we can offer is a way of speaking to the mind you actually have this morning, without scorn and without a fairy tale of instant clarity.

A page that will not diagnose you

Fog has many doors, and this house does not keep the key to them. Poor sleep, grief, a medicine, an illness, the simple fact of a long life: a paragraph cannot tell you which one knocked. We will not hand you a sleep programme, a list of powders, or a story about what your heart or your years must mean. We are not a sleep clinic. If the muffling is new or sudden, if it comes with weakness, confusion, a severe headache, trouble speaking, or any change that frightens you, contact a doctor rather than waiting to describe it more elegantly. Ordinary wool is one thing. A new and frightening wool is another, and the second does not belong to an essay.

If a medicine has been prescribed, do not stop it, skip it, or alter the dose because a morning was unclear. Some medicines affect the feeling of the mind. That is a conversation for the prescriber, in your own words: what the mornings are like, what you fear, what you hope. An ending decided at the kitchen counter is not the mastery of anything. It is a risk this page refuses to dress up as courage. Bring the questions. Leave the prescription alone until a clinician changes it with you.

Kindness to the mind you have today

Beside that care, and only beside it, a few human courtesies are worth naming. They are not a treatment. They will not burn the fog off by noon, and anyone who promises that is selling weather. Drink something. Eat a small breakfast at the table rather than postponing yourself all morning. Put one object back where your future self can find it: the keys, the glasses, the paper you will need at two. Say the next task aloud, in a single sentence, so the muffled mind has a rail to hold. Then do that task, or the first inch of it, and let the rest of the day remain uninvented for a while.

Attention, on a foggy morning, is a small lamp and not a searchlight. Ask it for one thing. The colour of the cup. The three steps between the chair and the sink. The name of the person you will see, written down if the writing helps. This is the old work of keeping company with your own faculties — attention, a modest will, a little imagination of the next honest hour — without pretending you have been issued a new brain. Muffled or not, you have met the morning that was actually there. Meet it without contempt. Contempt spends the very clarity you are short of.

What clears, and what may not

Some fogs lift by midmorning. Some stay through the afternoon, and the brave thing is to shrink the day’s promises until they fit the mind you have, not the mind you had on a bright Tuesday in another year. Shrinking a promise is not giving up the day. It is a form of accuracy. You may still be a dignified woman in a dressing gown at ten, with one task done and the rest declined without a speech of apology to the empty room.

We will not tell you that optimism is owed, or that a sterner routine will purchase a younger morning. If the fog is often with you, let a clinician know, even if part of you says it is too small to mention. Small, repeated, and frightening is already enough of a reason. This writing is education. It has not examined you. It cannot. When you want the wider room, the essay on attention, memory, will, and imagination is there, with the same refusal to play doctor. Until then, be kind to the wool. It is not the whole of you.

If you need care

A sudden change in thinking, speech, balance, or awareness belongs with a doctor, not with a better metaphor. If you are already in care, keep the plan, including any prescribed medicine, until that clinician changes it with you. The longer essay is brain optimization. A plain definition is in the glossary. Short answers are in the FAQ. Nothing on this page is for sale.
