Closing the sitting
The quiet you made for yourself has done what it can. The room is still here, and you are meant to come all the way back into it before you stand and trust your hands.
The sitting has a door on the far side
You may have been sitting with your own attention for a few minutes: a phrase you chose, a breath, a picture in the mind that you invited and can also dismiss. Self-hypnosis, in this house, is that sort of private practice. It is one part of hypnosis, done by you, to you. It is not a treatment for an illness, and it is not a performance. Closing it matters as much as beginning it. A mind that has been inward needs an ordinary threshold, the way a person who has been in a dim room needs a moment before the street. You were never gone. You were attending. Now you attend to the room.
A woman near seventy may want that threshold plain, without a voice telling her she is sinking or rising. A younger woman, after a loud day, needs the same plainness. Both are welcome. Neither is being put under, and neither is putting anyone else under. If you came hoping for a script to use on a husband, a friend, or an audience, there is no room for that wish in this house. The sitting is yours. The ending is yours. No other mind is the material.
Coming back by way of ordinary things
When you are ready to end, decide that you are ending. Say it inwardly in your own words: the sitting is finished, and I am bringing my attention back. Open your eyes if they were closed. Feel the chair under you, then your feet, then the temperature of the air on your face. Look at three objects you could name for a neighbor — a lamp, a cup, the corner of the window — and name them, silently or aloud. Move your hands. Roll your shoulders if that is comfortable. Take a drink of water if water is beside you. Sit for another quiet minute with your eyes open before you stand.
These are not spells, and they are not a treatment. They tell the senses that the private minute is over and the kitchen is real. If a count helps, count the objects, not a descent. This page will not lead you deeper. It only walks you out. Your ordinary voice is the right one. Stand if standing feels usual. If it does not, stay. There is no prize for speed. The proof of a closed sitting is not magic. It is that you could make the tea without wondering whose hands were on the kettle.
Not on the road, and not for anyone else
Do not begin a sitting in a car, on a bicycle, at a machine, or anywhere your ordinary attention keeps people safe. Do not drive, and do not handle anything sharp or hot, until you are as present as on a morning when you trust yourself with the kettle. If you feel dreamy, stay seated. Press your feet down until the pressure is obvious. The road can wait. Better late and fully here than prompt and half inside a quiet you have not left.
The other boundary does not bend because someone asked nicely. You do not do this to another person. Not a partner, not a friend, not a visitor, not anyone in your care, not a row of faces. If someone wants a practice, that person may read and choose for themselves. Your voice is not a tool for their mind. We will not teach the guiding of anyone else, on a stage or in a parlor. Closing your own sitting is a courtesy to your own day. It is not a method you export.
If you do not feel fully back
Most times the room returns, and you go on to the tap, the letter, the door. Sometimes attention stays soft, or a feeling lingers in a way you do not like. Stop. Do not start another sitting to repair the first. Speak your name. Put both feet on the floor. If you still feel far away, frightened, or unlike yourself, tell a living person. A clinician is the right company if distress stays. Do not decide that a difficult quiet means a medicine has failed, or that you should skip a dose to clear yourself. Self-hypnosis is not a cleansing, and not a reason to stop any prescribed medicine.
If you are in crisis in the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/). Elsewhere, use local emergency or crisis help. You may also decide, with no disgrace, that sittings are not for this month. The door can stay closed. When a sitting has ended well, let it be small. You came back. The ordinary room is the proof.
If you need care
If you feel unwell, far away, or in crisis after a sitting, seek a person. In the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/). Elsewhere, use local emergency help. Speak with a clinician if distress stays. Do not stop a prescribed medicine. This practice is for you alone, never for another person, never while driving or using machinery, and never a treatment. The longer essay is hypnosis. Plain definitions of hypnosis and self-hypnosis are in the glossary. Short answers are in the FAQ. Nothing here is for sale.
