A wish for company
The wish is simple enough to say in a kitchen, and large enough that people surround it with lightning it does not need: you would like someone to be with.
The wish, said without a spell
You may want a friend who knows how you take your tea, a companion for the long afternoon, a love, or simply a voice in the next chair that is not the radio. A woman near seventy may feel the wish as a quiet that has gone on too many evenings. A younger woman may feel it in a city full of people and a phone full of almosts. Both wishes are welcome. Neither is a defect. Naming the wish is not casting it. We will not give you words to recite at the ceiling, and we will not say the universe rearranges itself for a woman who wants company badly enough.
That story has bruised too many kind people. Intention, here, is attention pointed at a true aim, followed by a step a neighbor could see. It is not magic, not a law, not an income, and not a cure for grief or a low mood sitting beside the wish. You may want people and still be a whole person on a Tuesday when no one comes. The empty chair does not prove you failed a hidden test.
What will not arrive because you read this
This page cannot deliver a partner. It cannot deliver a friend. It cannot promise that a message will be answered, that a group will have a chair for you, or that loneliness will close by a date. It promises no income hiding inside the wish, as if company were a business the earnest deserve. It promises no cure. If you are already in a clinician’s care, stay with that care. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you have decided to call kinder days toward you. Kindness is not a substance a page can pour, and no result is owed to you by the world, the town, or a silent sky.
If the wish has become a crisis — if you are frightening yourself with how alone you are — stop reading and speak to a person. In the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/). Elsewhere, use local emergency or crisis help. A wish for company is human. It is not a substitute for help when the night is dangerous, and it is not a reason to manage that night with a ritual. We will not teach you to steer another person’s feelings so that they stay. Company that is managed is not company. It is a scene. This house will not help you build one, at seventy or at twenty-seven.
One step that does not require a board of pictures
Choose a step small enough to finish this week, and small enough that its failure would not prove you are unwanted. That last part matters. A step is an experiment, not a verdict. You might send one true note to one person you already know, without a speech: that you thought of them, and that you would like a short visit or a call. You might go to one ordinary place where people already are — a library hour, a faith room if that room is still yours, a class, a bench you can leave — and stay only as long as your dignity agrees. You might say hello to the neighbor whose name you know and have not used.
A younger reader might put the phone down for one evening and speak a plan aloud to a person, not only into the glass. An older reader might ask what actually meets in this town. None of these is a spell, and none is guaranteed. The aim is company of a kind that is kind. The step is the part you can do with your own hands. The result belongs to other people, and other people are free. Write the aim in plain words if paper helps, and under it one next step and a day. Then live that day without checking the sky for a sign.
If the step is met with silence
Silence can arrive. The note can go unanswered. You may come home more aware of the wish than when you left, which hurts, and which is not proof that you failed a hidden law. There is no hidden law. You may rest, or change the step, or tend one conversation you already have instead of assembling a new life by force. Do not prosecute yourself. Do not prosecute a town or an age that failed to appear.
If a person comes, they come as a person, not as a reward for correct wanting. If no one comes this month, you are still the woman who told the truth and took one honest step. That is the whole claim. You may hope again. You may invite again. You may not steer anyone. Nothing in the wish is magic, income, or a cure. The chair may stay one chair. You may set a second cup as a courtesy, and drink your own if the possibility declines.
If you need care
If you are in crisis in the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/). A page cannot sit with you, and it cannot send you a friend. If loneliness or a low mood is staying, speak with a clinician, and do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Nothing here promises a partner, a friend, an income, magic, or a cure. The longer essay is manifestation. The plain definition is in the glossary. Short answers are in the FAQ. Nothing here is for sale.
