If you’re new here

A short map, in ordinary English, for the woman this house was written for first — and a welcome if you have just walked in.

You may be near seventy. The evening may be quieter than it used to be. You have been talking yourself out of a low mood, and you would like warmth, clarity, and a little dignity while you do it. You do not have to be cheerful. You do not have to buy anything. You do not have to read all nine rooms tonight.

If you are younger, you are welcome in the same house. A new city, a thin week, a question about your care — come in. The rules do not change with age. Do not stop a prescribed antidepressant, or any other prescribed medicine, because of something you read here. Talk with your clinician about any change in care. If you are in crisis in the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/).

The long essays use an older, more poetic English. These paths do not. They are doors. Pick the feeling that is closest, open one room, and leave when you have had enough. Nothing here is a diagnosis, and nothing here is for sale.

Four ways in

  • If you’re lonely

For a quiet house, or a life with fewer voices than you wanted.

Loneliness is the subject, not a defect to clear by Friday. The path names the room, a few circumstances, and where to get help that is not a page.

  • If you’re low

Education beside care. Not a clinic, and not a reason to change a medicine.

Read the limits first. This house will never tell you to stop, skip, or change a prescribed antidepressant. Those pages have not been medically reviewed.

  • If you want your mornings back

Fog, memory, and a day that has lost its timetable.

Not a sleep clinic. If the change was sudden, talk with a doctor. The path points to brain optimization and to getting your life back.

  • If you’re curious about the mind

Your own mind only. Attention, a chair, and what this house will not teach.

Mind control here is the government of your own thoughts. It is not a way to steer another person. Meditation is not a cure. Hypnosis is not for anyone else.

How to use a path

  1. Read the note at the top. If it says this is not care, believe it.
  2. Open the room it names. The long essay can wait until you want that voice.
  3. If one circumstance sounds like your week, open that page. One is enough.
  4. If you need a person, not a page, use the help named there. In the United States, that is 988.
