Online-only friendships
The messages are kind. The evening is still a room with one chair pulled out.
Company that ends at the glass
A younger woman may know this room before she knows any other. The friendship lives in a thread. It has jokes, and a history, and a person who has read more of your true sentences than the people in your building have. That can be real. Do not let anyone tell you a typed kindness is nothing. Do not let the thread tell you it is a whole life. You can close the glass and be in a room no one is entering. The fondness was not imaginary. The chair is still empty.
An older reader may be here as well. A daughter three time zones away. A circle that once met in chairs and now meets as faces in boxes. The thinness is not an age. It is the feeling that you were with someone and then, when the glass went dark, you were not. Warmth that ends at the edge of a screen is still warmth. It is also a limit. Naming the limit is not ingratitude. It is accuracy.
When the chat goes quiet
The hard hour is the one when the chat goes quiet. You sent the true thing, or the light thing, and the answer does not come. At night the mind is a poor historian. It writes a whole story: you were too much, or dull, or already dropped. Sometimes a person is on a bus. Sometimes they are tired. Sometimes they are pulling away, and you will not know which, and later may not explain. You are allowed to feel the quiet. You are not required to punish yourself for it. A bid may fail.
We will not teach you how to make them reply. A whole market exists for managing another person’s attention, and this house will not join it. No performance calculated to pull a heart back through a screen. The only mind you are invited to govern is your own. When the inner voice opens a trial, you may set the trial down. You do not have their evening in front of you. Guessing is not knowledge. Waiting without contempt is a skill, not a promise.
A silence is not a prescription
Read this plainly. Do not stop a prescribed antidepressant, or any other prescribed medicine, because a chat went quiet. A silence in a thread is not a reason to skip a dose, to change an amount, or to decide the medicine made you lonely, or that you may set it aside because you feel worse tonight. Loneliness is not a clinician. An app is not a clinician. This essay is not a clinician. Keep the plan until the person who prescribes changes it with you. If you have questions, write them down. There is a page for that, and it gives the same order: do not edit the dose from something you read.
This page has not been medically reviewed. It is education beside care, not instead of care. If the thin friendship has settled into a heaviness that sleep does not mend, say so to a clinician. You do not have to mend the social life before you deserve the appointment. Being young, or being online, does not make the heaviness trivial, and it does not make this house a place that treats it. We will not diagnose you from a familiar paragraph. We do not keep stories we did not live.
The truth at the size of the truth
Beside care, and only beside it, you might tell the truth at its real size. To the person, if it is safe: I like our messages, and some evenings the screen is not enough. To yourself: this is a modern loneliness, and modern does not make it thin in the way that means unreal. One offline hello, if you want it, can be small — a neighbour, a class, a call with a voice — without a speech about fixing your life. If you do not want that this month, you are not failing a program. There is a subject, and you are in it.
The longer room is loneliness itself, which will not rush you to be accompanied by Friday. If the whole day, not only the screen, is the ache, the page younger, and lonely is a neighbouring door. Use the page that fits the hour. None of them will tell you to abandon a medicine because a person did not type back. Your mind is yours to steady. Your prescription is not a chat’s to command.
If you need care
If you are in crisis in the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/) before you do anything else on this page. You do not need a tidy explanation. If you are elsewhere, contact your local emergency number or a local crisis service. This page will not describe ways to harm yourself. A page cannot sit in the chair beside you. Please let a person do it.
If you are not in crisis, you may still tell a clinician that the friendships feel thin. Keep any prescribed medicine as directed until that clinician changes the plan with you. Do not change it because a message did not come. The longer essay is the loneliness room. Plain definitions live in the glossary, including loneliness and adjunct to care. Short answers are in the FAQ. Nothing on this page is for sale.
