Younger, and lonely

The day can be full of voices and still shut the door on a room where nobody knows what you almost said.

Unknown when the day ends

You can be spoken to all afternoon and go home unwitnessed. The group moves on. The joke lands a little to the left of the thing you meant. People at work are kind at a desk and gone by evening, which is not always a cruelty, only a limit, and the limit still leaves the night large. Other people’s kitchens glow on a screen, arranged and accompanied. Yours may be a bowl and a bright phone. Wanting a friend is not childish. It is not a diagnosis. It is not proof that you have failed at being young, or at being interesting, or at being the sort of woman other women know how to keep. Loneliness at this age is often told to wait, as if time itself were going to sit down beside you. Time is not a companion. It is only time.

This page is education, and a kind of company in the learning. It is not your clinician. It is not a circle of friends delivered by paragraph. It is not a reason to treat your life as a problem you must solve before you deserve warmth. You are already a person in a circumstance. The circumstance is that the witness has not arrived, or has not stayed. Many women stand in it, including women who look, from the outside, as if the invitations were enough. An invitation is not the same thing as being known. A crowded photograph is not the same thing as a witness. If the city itself is new, and the unknown evening began with a move, the neighbouring page is a new city. The feeling is kin. The furniture is different. You may read either without earning the other.

The medicine question, in plain words

If you are questioning a prescribed antidepressant, or any other prescribed medicine, read this part slowly. Do not stop it. Do not skip doses to see what happens. Do not change the amount because a lonely week made the bottle look like the cause, or like the enemy. Stopping can be dangerous. A friend who tells you to stop the medicine, and a friend who tells you never to ask a question, are both speaking more largely than a friend can see. Write down what you hope, what you fear, and what you have noticed in your days and your sleep. Take those words to the clinician who prescribes. That conversation is the right size for a decision. An essay is not. This house has not been medically reviewed. It will not stand in for the person who can hear your whole situation, and it will not congratulate you for deciding alone.

Being lonely is also not, by itself, a reason to start or stop anything this website has no authority to start or stop. We do not prescribe. We do not withdraw. If the loneliness has thickened into a heaviness that will not lift, the depression room is the neighbouring essay, with the same rule and the same refusal to play clinic. Education can sit beside care. It cannot take care’s chair.

A bid the size of the truth

If you want contact, reach once in a shape that fits the truth rather than a performance. One sentence to one safe person, without the costume of being fine. One gathering you are allowed to leave. One ordinary interest that puts you in a room on purpose — a class, a bench people return to, a service you are actually willing to sit through — not as a trick for making people need you. We will not teach you how to manage anyone’s attention, or how to become indispensable so that you cannot be left. Charm used as a lever is outside these walls. Your own inner speech is inside them. The voice that calls you pathetic, or behind, or too much, is not filing a report. It is frightened, and it has become unkind. Answer it without contempt. You are lonely. You are not a lesser woman for the loneliness, and you are not required to be cheerful company in order to be worth a seat.

The ache may not leave because you have understood it. Understanding was never a bargain we offered. What we will protect is your dignity while the ache remains, and the plain path toward real care if the ache is more than loneliness. The subject, held without a rush to fix it, is the whole of the loneliness room. This page is only a younger doorway into that room.

If you need care

If you are in crisis in the United States, call or text 988 (https://988lifeline.org/). If you are elsewhere, contact your local emergency number or a local crisis service. Do this before you keep reading, if the night is already that kind of night. This page will not describe ways to harm yourself.

If you are not in crisis, you may still tell a clinician that you are lonely. It is part of the picture, not a side issue you must solve before you deserve the appointment. Keep any prescribed medicine as directed until that clinician changes the plan with you. Plain definitions are in the glossary: loneliness, adjunct to care, and not a clinic. Short answers, including the one about antidepressants, are in the FAQ. Nothing here is for sale.
